Should we use vaccines?

by Sandy
(Toronto, Canada)

I also have strong beliefs/views in a more natural lifestyle, and my partner and I have begun to think about not vaccinating our baby (due in 2 months).

I still feel I need more support in that decision (meeting parents, support groups, information on the topic.) I have asked my midwife to look into her databases to see studies and stats that would make me more sure about the choice.

Is there any literature or sites that you recommend?? How has that decision affected you and your family?

I mean in regards to employment and schools, I work in a school and there is a vaccination log needed to enroll and for me to work!

My partner has told me about a religious waiver form, I just haven't found that info in the area I work in.

I would greatly appreciate it!

Coming Soon...
by: Heather ;-)

Sandy,

First, it's amazing how readers bring up things on my "writing list"! I am scheduled to post an article about this subject in the next few months.

However...that's not going to help you! You need that info now!

So, I'm going to look through my notes for that article, do a little research, and get back to you tomorrow. I just wanted you to know I saw your post, and that I was working on a response.

By all means, if others have advice or thoughts to share, please do so!

Until then,
Heather

You can pick and choose
by: Heather ;-)

Sandy,

I'm seated with my coffee - children are quiet and it's a good time to think - so here we go!

First of all, Cameron and I did decide to vaccinate our children. After much thought, we decided that with all the babies in the world who are dying because they can't get vaccines, we would be less-than-wise to avoid them all together. There is a difference between being 21st century natural and Middle Ages natural!

With that said, there is no reason it has to be all-or-nothing. You can look through each vaccine at a time, and decide which you're going to use and which ones you're not. (For example, many parents choose not to give their children the chicken pox vaccine, and expose their children to the chicken pox instead - but that's not until your baby is older!)

As for resources, here's some links to check out:

This article discusses the benefits of vaccinations. There are several interesting articles linked to that one worth read through.

This article lists the vaccinations you're baby will be eligible to have. I would then begin researching each of them to determine which you want to keep or throw.

As always, keep a good dialog going with your doctor about what you're thinking regarding vaccinations. He/she will have the latest medical research regarding vaccines.

As for the autism-vaccine wars, it is important to get full information on this subject. Honestly, I've not done the research on this, so I won't offer an opinion here. However, there is no doubt that not ALL vaccines can be linked to autism. If there IS a link, it will be with specific vaccines.

In this medical study printed in The New England Medical Journal the scientists were able to highlight that, for at least the MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccine, the link is almost non-existant. Here's the article.

Now that you've brought it up, Sandy, my fingers are itching to get researching and writing...so articles on this topic have moved up the "To Do List". ;-) Thanks for bringing it up. Feel free to write back, as always!

with care,
Heather
