Worried About Choking

by Cathy
(Huntington Beach, CA)

Many suggest giving my 9-month-old son breads, cereals (cheerios type), bananas, small cubes of cheese, and other types of finger foods. I am deathly afraid of giving him these type of foods for fear of choking.

Aren't breads too dry and therefore would cause him to choke? How can you give a baby a frozen or toasted bagel without him biting off a big piece? Will he really chew or just swallow it whole?

Some suggest letting babies use a mesh baby feeder pacificer type device. However, I feel like this is just "sucking" on the food and not teaching him textures of food or giving the baby the "nutrition" from the food. For now, I have coarsely mashed/blenderized table foods (I am finally comfortable to give coarser textured foods).

Forget cheese! How can a baby safely chew such a hard food?? Am I being overly neurotic? Should I just give these foods to him and watch him very closely with my what-to-do-when-your-baby-chokes handout ready? Help! Please give me some reassurance or tips or calming advice!

(To note: my son has one top tooth and one bottom tooth - which to me seems more so that he will bite off a chunk and choke!)

How long does it usually take for infants to get the "hang" of eating food?

by Jennifer Potvin
(The Colony, TX)

My 7 month old just started on solids yesterday, and she automatically pushes everything back out of her mouth! It is a very messy ordeal! I was just curious as to approx. how long it might take for her to get the hang of it, and to actually swallow some food??

Baby Food Schedule?

by afshan ahmed
(u.a.e)

My son is 1yr 3months old. Could you please suggest me a meal plan as to what should I feed him and at what times?

I give him 3 meals in a day, but I can't think of proper snacks in between. He is very used to mashed food and doesn't eat solid foods full enough and thus keeps bothering me for breast milk...I want to stop breastfeeding him, but he just doesn't sleep any other way. He keeps waking 2-3 times during night and sleeps only when I feed him milk. I'll be very thankful for your help.

Infant Chewing on Wood

by Brian
(United States)

Our daughter is not quite 18 months old. She has started to gnaw and chew on a bed made of wood. She does not eat the wood but spits it out. We have put several different condiments on the spot she chews on.

What should we do?

How Do I Know if She's Teething?

by Kimberly Soto
(Fort Smith, AR)

I am a new mother loving this site :). I have a question about teething. My main question is when?

My daughter Shelby is three months old, and drooling like a basset hound (hee hee!). She has been fussier than normal, she normally does not fuss a whole lot. How can i tell if she is getting any teeth?

Bruising

by Cindy
(Texas)

I have a 7 week old baby, and I noticed this morning that he has a green bruise on the top of his head near the front fontenal spot. It is not swollen or sunken in ... just concerned about what this could be.

Bruised Gum

My baby was chewing on a plastic toy over 2 weeks ago and he cut his gum and bled a little. Ever since then, there is a "blood blister" like bruise on his gum in that spot. He has four teeth already, I know he's teething, but this bruise is concerning me! Any suggestions, advice?

Thanks!

My baby refused all bottles until you showed me the MAM bottle. Thank you so much for the recommendation. I wouldn't have known about them if not for your website.
