2 Month Old with Diarrhea

by Michelle
(OH)

My 2 month old son got his shots may 7 and started getting diarrhea the next day. He had had it ever since and it has almost been a week. It started out green and now it has turned yellow. He doesn't seem dehydrated, but is drooling like he is teething already. Should i be concerned about his diarrhea going on this long or is it normal? I'm a first time mom so these things worry me.

Why does my baby spit up so much?

My son is 5 weeks old and seems to spit up everything he eats. I breastfeed and after every feeding he spits or throws up everything he just ate. He is gaining weight, but just started.

He weighed 8 lbs 6oz when he was born and weighs 9 lbs 4 oz now. I asked his doctor and he said he just hasn't learned to stop eating when he gets full. I'm really concerned because I don't want this to affect his esophagus. Please help!!

Newborn goes week without pooping

by Anne
(Houston)

Ever since my milk came in my daughter pooped only every other to every 3 days. Today she is 6 weeks old and we are now on day 7. Last week she went 5 days. My doctor wasn't concerned and said that it's not uncommon, however they also say that nursing babies poop all the time. It's confusing.

When I call in to the Doctor the nurses advice was apple juice or prune juice. On day 4 of this week I did try 1oz of apple juice and nothing changed. Should I try doing prunes, or the other advice was a glyceren suppository.

I don't want to give her these things but I am worried about her poop. She is only breastfeeding. My other 2 children who were only breastfed pooped practically every time they nursed!

My baby had normal bowel movements up until about two weeks ago. Whats going on?

by Sarah Chew
(Blacksburg, Va)

My little girl had normal bowel movements up until about two weeks ago and now she poops maybe every other day. She isn't really straining, but her gas smells horrific. I had a lot of trouble in the beginning and have cut out all gassy foods, tried the drops, and all the other stuff that's out there.

We started giving her half formula and half breast milk in the mornings because I recently went back to work. Could that be what is changing her bowel movements? Why would her gas all of a sudden be smelling so bad?

3 month old baby not pooping?

My 3 month old baby hasn't had a bowel movement in about a week. For the past 3 days he has been very gassy and very fussy. He is not sleeping as well as he did because of this. I'm wondering if not pooping is hurting his belly? If so, what can I do to help him?

Zantac is not working

by Sandy Neilson
(Garden City, MI)

My 2 month old son keeps spitting up, sometimes it's normal spit up but other times it's projectile…the Doc gave me Zantac to give to him twice a day, but ti seems like it works for a little bit then he's back to his puking a few feedings later.

He's been really restless since I've been giving him the meds. It's spit up has been so bad that I put him on Enfamil and on top of that I put cereal in his bottle to keep it down, and just like the zantac it works for a little then it stops. I've tried everything!!!

Proping him up, burping him every ounce, giving him a binky, changing the formula, changing the kind of bottle and nipple that he eats out of…I mean I've tried EVERYTHING, and being a young mother!!!

It's kinda freakin me out!!! So if you can help me out in any way, please!! I would appreciate it!

Sandy

Grunting and Red Faced

by Jennifer
(Knoxville TN)

Rylan my son, 4 weeks old, grunts, and strains what feels like 24/7. The only time he seems ok is on his stomach, and during feedings, and sometimes he does it during feedings. He is breastfeed, and he has no problem with using the rest room.

The doctor told me to try formula, to see if he might have an allergy to what I maybe eating, caffeine, chocolate, etc. However, I don't feel that is the problem, we have done the formula for a week, and his face looks bad, like broken out, he now only has two movements, bad, like up the back, in his diapers twice a day. Verses the breastfed moments of many a day. I made the decision to go back to breast milk.

Guess my question is, why is he grunting, pushing, just uncomfortable, and still having good bowel movements? He was born 5 weeks early, and I am a diabetic mother of 15 years, the only problem he had was keeping his bloodsugar up, and the NICU had him for a week, and he came home.

He was 6lbs 14oz at 34 1/2 weeks, so he wasn't a tiny baby. Ha Ha, please just some advice on how to get through this. Thanks for your time.. Jennifer

5 week infant with runny stools

Till a month old, my formula fed (along with little breast feeding) infant had a toothpaste like consistency, with a max of one or two stools a day with no odour.

But now his stools have turned real runny with both his stool and gas turned foul smelling and he now passes loose stools at least 6-7 times. He has trouble sleeping and of course strains his stomach quite often. Please advise.

When when my son tries to poop does it look like spit?

My son is 3 years old and every time he tries to poop, which has been a lot lately, nothing happens and when he bends over for us to wipe his bum it literally looks like spit coming from his bum and no poop. It has been like this for a whole day now, any idea what it might be?!

How many days can a 6 week old go without bowel movement before I should be concerned?

I have a 6 week old baby girl. This is her 3rd day without a bowel movement. She has been spitting up more, more fussy, and not sleeping real well.

How long should I let her go before I call a pediatrician. Is there anything I can do at home? My doc told me not to give her water that she gets all the water she needs from the formula.

No poops for 12 days with exclusively breastfed 5-month old

by Linda
(Denver, CO)

My 5-month old weighs 18.3 pounds and is 27.5 inches tall. At birth, he weighed 7 pounds 1 ounce and was 20 inches tall. He is exclusively breastfed, from the breast and not from the bottle.

He used to go poopy every 3 days or so, but now it's been 12 days and no "real" poop. He's had a few dollups of poop that was pea-sized, and some smears in his diaper. He passes gas, but he's not very gassy. He seems to be fine, laughing and playing. He's urinating just fine as well. He feeds for about 5 minutes at a time, so I'm concerned that he's not getting any hindmilk.

I've heard that the longest an exclusively breastfed baby has ever gone without a poop was 20 days.

Is it normal for an exclusively breastfed 5-month old not to poop for this long? Thanks!

How do I get my breastfed infant to have regular bowel movements?

by Mary
(Utah)

My baby is 8 weeks and isn't having bowel movements on a regular basis. The last two times she went I had to stimulate her anus. She is very gassy and very fragrant when she does pass gas. I have tried so many things to help her, but am getting worn out with it and feel like I am getting no where.

Six month old with trouble with bowel movements and stomach aches.

by Tara
(USA)

My son is just over 6 months old. He has been having trouble with bowel movements for the last 3 weeks or so. In addition, he is waking up at least once if not a few times a night screaming in pain (my guess from a stomach ache).

I have cut out all foods that may be binding, increased prunes, and even given him Miralax on occasion. Even if his poop is not hard, he still struggles to go. Nothing seems to be helping.

He went from sleeping through the night at 5 weeks and being very happy to being up a lot and being more irritable. I have been given conflicting advice. What do you recommend? Last time I took him to the doctor they said to give him more prunes and that's it. After a month of this, I'm beginning to get very frustrated.

Newborn Hasn't Had Bowel Movement for 3 Days

by Lili

I breastfeed my 11 days old baby and supplement with formula. He had bowel movement with each feed for the first week. For the past three days, he hasn't had any.

He grunts and seems to be pushing but only the gas passes. The grunting started about 5 days ago and keeps him up most of the night. Massaging the stomach and pressing with his legs as the pediatrician suggested hasn't helped.
Is there anything else I can do?

Is there something wrong with my son?

by Jenny
(Washington)

I have a 2 year old son. Sometimes his stool has green chalky chunks in it. I watch everything he eats. Ive checked his room. There's nothing that resembles it that he could be ingesting. It looks like undigested light green tums. which are kept out of reach. I'm so confused. Please help me put my mind at ease.
Thank you

Constipated Now for Almost 2 Months

by Kelly
(Greenville, NH)

My son is now 7 months old. When he was about 2 weeks old we started running into constipation we tried new formulas and found that Similac sensitive turned him into a happy baby and he was pooping fine at least every other day. When I started him on rice he got constipated the next day so I tried him on oatmeal and he seemed to be doing fine.

Once I put him on the fruits and veggies he got constipated again. I have been giving him 2 ounces of prune juice feeding him all the fruits that would help him go and he still screams for about a half hour and will only push out a small hard poop.

Finally, his doctor said to try Miralax so I had him on that for a week and it did seem to help he didn't cry for as long, but I had just taken him off it for 2 days and we are back to small hard poops and a screaming session when he has to go. I don't know what else to do!!! Could there be an underling issue? or do I keep him on Miralax which I don't know if that is a good thing or not!!

4 Month Old Not Pooping, But Puking

My son is 4 months old. He hasn't been pooping the last 3 days but he is puking up a lot. This is very unusual for him. He normally doesn't puke up at all and poops often. I am very concerned. I know he is teething but I didn't think that has anything
do to with it.
Thank you Aurora

My baby grunts, strains, and turns red when he tries to poop.

by Katrina
(Midwest City OK)

My baby is breastfed and when he tries to poop or even pass gas it looks like he's in horrible pain. He cries, struggles, turns red and still sometimes the poop or gas doesn't come out. I'll massage his tummy, gently push his legs up towards his chest and it works for the gas but not helping him poop. What else can I do to help him. My doctor said it was normal for new babies, he's a month old and not to worry. I hate seeing him struggle and want to help; any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Baby Passing Gas Problems

by Ginette Lafreniere
(New Liskeard, Canada)

My baby forces all the time, and seems to strain to pass gas but doesn't always pass it. I cut out dairy products, but he still seems to strain all the time.

He even does it during feedings, and I try to calm him down but nothing seems to work. I am breastfeeding during the day, with a nighttime bottle of half breastmilk and half formula.

My 3.3 month old baby diagonised with acute enterocolitis

by Anand Naik
(Mumbai, MH, India)

My 3.3 month old baby started having rashes on his body 2 weeks back, doctor diagnosed it as an infection and suggested one week course of Taxim-O syrup. In next week infant started passing green stool with mucous and doctor diagnosed it as acute enterocolitis.

He is currently on Ofloxacin suspension (3 ml *2 times). He told us to keep a watch on baby's anterior fonatnelle, and we are scared. He is a normal delivery with 3.6kg weight at birth and was doing absolutely fine till 3 months of age. Currently, despite all this problems, he is chirpy, active and progressing per his infant milestones. May be its a first child syndrome to us, but would like to know--
1. If the medication for enterocolitis is correct and what connection it may have with anterior fontanelle.
2. If this is something alarming for us to improve on the care we are taking for the infant.

Thanks a ton in advance.

Anand
