Newborn Hasn't Had Bowel Movement for 3 Days

by Lili

I breastfeed my 11 days old baby and supplement with formula. He had bowel movement with each feed for the first week. For the past three days, he hasn't had any.

He grunts and seems to be pushing but only the gas passes. The grunting started about 5 days ago and keeps him up most of the night. Massaging the stomach and pressing with his legs as the pediatrician suggested hasn't helped.
Is there anything else I can do?

Grunting is Normal...3 Days is Borderline
by: Heather ;-)

Lili,

Have you noticed any changes in the food you've eaten in the past 3 days? Did you switch formula during that time? That could give you an idea of why he's suddenly switched.

Some grunting is normal with newborns. He's just learning how the digestive process works. He's getting to know his body's signals and how to push gas or feces out of his body.

I have written an article that gives anti-constipation tips. However, since your baby is so young, I would hold off giving him anything (including prune juice) unless your doctor has given permission.

If he hasn't gone by tomorrow (total 4-5 days), call your doctor again and ask about giving him a half a suppository. We had to do that a few times with my girls. You insert these little wax-like things into the rectum, stimulating him to defecate. Do not do this without doctor's guidance.

Your baby is very small, a full suppository is probably too big. Also, they can be habit-forming, and at this early age your doctor may not want to interfere with him learning to go on his own.

At this young age, it will be extremely important not to do anything without your doctor's permission. Start with thinking over your diet and any changes in the past few days for a cause. Then give your pediatrician a call to discuss "where to now" ideas.

I hope this can be useful, good luck!

with care,
Heather
