My Daughter Hasn't Pooped

by Tanmarocc
(NJ)

My daughter hasn't pooped in a day and a half...what can I do? I am breastfeeding her and never had this problem until last week. She didn't poop for one day. She is 3 1/2 months and I am a little concerned.

My Daughter Hasn't Pooped
by: Kim

I would try and give your little one some water mixed with a small amount of Prune Juice and see if that helps. That's what my pediatrician has suggested to me before. If that doesn't work you may want to give your pediatrician a call.
Hope she gets to poopin' soon!

Probably Not Constipation...
by: Heather ;-)

Since you're breastfeeding, it's probably unlikely that your baby is constipated. Breastmilk contains naturally laxatives that help your baby stay regular.

If she hasn't gone in a few days, and when she DOES go it's thicker than peanut butter, than you may indeed have a rare case of breastfeed-constipation. Speak to your doctor or read through this article for some simple constipation remedies you can try. (BTW, Kim's suggestion is a good one, I used it with both my girls with great results.)

Now...assuming it's not constipation, it could be that your infant is not getting enough of the hindmilk in your breastmilk. The first milk expressed is foremilk, and it has less fat and calories. Since it's easier to digest, it is seen in the number of wet diapers your baby has.

The hindmilk is were most the good stuff is in breastmilk. Try adjusting your breastfeeding position, or monitoring to make sure she's eating long enough on each breast to be draining the hindmilk from both sides. (This varies from 5 minutes on a side to 20...it depends on your baby's nursing temperament.)

How do you determine if it is, in fact, a lack of good hindmilk nutrition? Weight checks. That will tell you if your baby is getting the nutrition she needs. Step on the scale without your baby, then step on it again with your baby. Subtract the two to get your baby's weight.

At 3 1/2 months I wouldn't be too concerned about a delay of a day or two. My daughters would sometimes skip 2 (or even 3) days between healthy movements when they were breastfed. However, if your baby is becoming increasingly fussy and starts not eating well, it's time for a doctor visit.

I hope this is helpful, by all means feel free to post a reply here or email me at heather@the-essential-infant-resource-for-moms.com

with care,
Heather
