My 10 month old won't sleep through the night

by Janice
(Miami, FL)

My son started sleeping through the night at around 8 weeks (6 hours). He's been doing great, but then all of a sudden last month he started waking up and crying at around 2pm.

At first we thought he'd go back to sleep. But after 45 minutes, he was still half-crying and stirring.

We're at our wits end. How can we get him to go back to sleep?

exhausted,
Janice

Hunger Pains?
by: Lori

Janice,

My 11 month old also did that for a while. Eventually, we figured out that he wasn't self-feeding enough and was just hungry.

We started encouraging him to eat by introducing applesauce, etc at the end of the meal, just to make sure he really WAS full.

Often times, he was "finished" because he wanted to get down, not because he was actually full.

Increasing his supper options, and adding a before-bedtime bottle took care of it for us.

Good luck!

I remember putting a little baby oatmeal cereal in the before bed bottle to help my baby avoid hunger wake-ups.

It didn't always work, and when it didn't, we'd wait 15 minutes or so, and if she was still "bothered" I'd go in there and retreat to the "4th Trimester" recommended by Dr. Harvey Karp. Technically she should have been over needing that, but I found that it was extremely comforting for her, and allowed everybody to go back to sleep.

The technique involves the 5 "S's"
Swaddle, Swing, Side, SHhhh, and Suck.
So I'd swaddle her (loosely at this age) and make sure I held her so she was on her side, while swinging gently back and forth, and offer the a quiet shhhh next to her ear(so she could hear it over her screaming!)

It's like she remembered this from her very early so-called colic days, and really appreciated it.

Hope this can help some!
