How do I get my breastfed infant to have regular bowel movements?

by Mary
(Utah)

My baby is 8 weeks and isn't having bowel movements on a regular basis. The last two times she went I had to stimulate her anus. She is very gassy and very fragrant when she does pass gas. I have tried so many things to help her, but am getting worn out with it and feel like I am getting no where.

Define "regular"
by: Heather ;-)

Mary,

It's important for you to identify what you consider "regular". Every day? every other day? twice a day? Until we have that information, any helpful tips will be limited.

On the other hand, more important than "regular" is the actual consistency of the movement. (Prepare here for grossness.)

Is it thicker than peanut butter? Pellets? or watery? That will tell you a lot about whether your "regular" definition matches your baby's definition of regular. If the stools seem soft, but not watery, but are coming every other day or so, she's probably fine.

Beware of stimulating her to poop too often. Doing so will let her natural functions get lazy and will make the problem worse in the long run.

I've written two articles that may help. The first is on identifying constipation, and the second is on treating it.

If you're still concerned, call your doctor. It's important for her/him to "stay in the loop" regarding your baby's health. She'll be able to give you specific advice for your specific baby.

Good luck and God bless,
Heather

defining regular
by: MAry

The first time she went 9 days with out a poop, then a three day space and this last time 15 days. Although today she went twice without any help. I think we may have found the problem.

No wonder!
by: Heather ;-)

Mary,

Yikes! 9 days and 14 days! No wonder you were worried! I'm glad you've found the problem. If you don't mind sharing, can you post your solution? It could be helpful to other moms with similar concerns.

with care,
Heather

What I did
by: Mary

I think the problem was that I wasn't consuming enough calories. My milk wasn't very thick. I have also started massaging her abdomen and lower back. She is now going about once every week. I hope she is over the rough spot.
