Constipation Question

What can you give a one-year-old who is very picky and drinks milk for constipation. She is very very picky. She does poop, but it's always hard and she always has a hard time and cries.

Things to Try
by: Heather ;-)

Dear friend,

As the mother of a chronically constipated baby (and now preschooler) I'm very familiar with the concerns you have about your struggling infant.

There are a whole host of things you can try to give your picky eater to help is situation. (See an entire article on curing constipation here.)

Here's the cliff notes version on what I would try first.

1. Slip a little prune juice into her milk. I'm talking an ounce or so, LITTLE. If she refuses to drink it (as I suspect) give her a little chocolate milk once a day with a little prune juice. She's less likely to notice it in chocolate milk. Don't use the store-bought, since it's loaded with sugar. Try the special powder drinks that are slightly better. Once she seems better, you can cut out the chocolate altogther.

2. Try switching to soy milk. My youngest struggled with constipation until we switched her to soy milk. Now she never struggles with it.

3. Limit binding foods. Limit feeding her rice cereal, bananas, carrots, applesauce, white bread, and other dairy products. These items tend to dry out and lead to constipation issues. Cut back on these amounts for a while and see what happens.

4. Introduce fiber-happy foods. At a year old, there are few things your baby can't eat. Diced well, offer her peaches, pears, peas, apricots, plums, prunes, broccoli, spinach, oatmeal, etc. These foods help keep her system moving well.

If these things don't seem to be helping, contact your doctor. If she's gone 5 days or more without a bowel movement, call your doctor.

I hope this can be helpful!

with care,
Heather
