Blocked Nose

by Sean Curran
(Derry)

My son is now three weeks old, he seems to have a constant blocked nose which is interfering with his eating and sleeping. Is there anything I can do to resolve this problem?

Thank you for your time.

He'll HATE it, but thank you later
by: Heather ;-)

Sean,

The primary thing you should do to help your baby is to suck out his nose with a nasal aspirator. He will absolutely hate you for it (for the time being anyway). But it will help.

Purchase some salt water (or it may be called saline) nose drops and put a little in each nostril. Then gently use a nasal aspirator to suck out the nasties causing his congestion.

A nasal aspirator is is bulb-shaped with a long tip that you insert in your baby's nose, while squeezing the bulb. Once inserted, you release the bulb and the automatic suction will suck a lot of that nasty gunk out of his nose.

Naturally, this is just a temporary help. I would talk to your doctor if he seems labored in his breathing, if the gunk turns yellow or green, or if it has been several days with no signs of improving.

At three weeks, I would NOT give him any medication (unless the doctor says so). This is the best remedy for now.

Good luck and God bless,
Heather
