Baby Passing Gas Problems

by Ginette Lafreniere
(New Liskeard, Canada)

My baby forces all the time, and seems to strain to pass gas but doesn't always pass it. I cut out dairy products, but he still seems to strain all the time.

He even does it during feedings, and I try to calm him down but nothing seems to work. I am breastfeeding during the day, with a nighttime bottle of half breastmilk and half formula.

No Signs of Constipation? Probably Normal
by: Heather ;-)

Ginette,

It's so difficult to watch your baby straining his bowels! I would find myself cheering my girls on, wishing something to happen, because they looked so uncomfortable.

First, if you think he may have gas, I recommend getting some Mylicon drops. These little drops worked wonders on both my gaseous girls.

Second, watch his bowel movements for signs of constipation. If the poop is thicker than peanut butter, here are some constipation cures you can try.

If constipation doesn't look like the problem, and he still seems gassy after using the drops and watching what you eat (broccoli and green peppers always made my breastmilk gassy), go ahead and give your doctor a call.

Keep in mind that your baby is still pretty young, and is still working out how that-whole-digestive-thing is supposed to work. Some straining and "dramatics" during gas and pooping is normal.

I hope this is helpful, feel free to email me or post here if you need more info.

with care,
Heather
