Top Baby Books: Guess How Much I Love You
Author:
Sam McBratney and Anita Jeram
Why It's Loved:
Guess How Much I Love You is the ultimate hormonally-releasing, post-partum, teary-eye mom's book. It captures the essence of a mother's love
and willingness to sacrifice for her "little nutbrown hare". (Actually, it's gender-neutral, since it's written as "Big Nutbrown Hare" and "Little
Nutbrown Hare".)
A beautiful before-bedtime story, the act of reading the story with your infant in your arms only makes it sweeter. Read the book, cuddle and kiss,
and then rock your baby into blissful happiness!
An Excerpt:
"I love you all the way down the lane as far as
the river."
cried Little Nutbrown Hare.
On the Other Hand...
There is an element of competition introduced in this book that some parents have found distasteful ("I love you more!"). There are some indications
that no matter what Little Nutbrown Hare can do, "I love you as high as I can hop!", Big Nutbrown Hare can do it better (hopping "so high his ears
touched the branches above".)
Some children can get stressed with that level of competition, while others (like my Lauren) take it as an opportunity
to "out-love" and thrive on it. You'll need to decide whether this book is good a choice for your family.
Another complaint against the book is that it doesn't have the same pleasant rhythm of most top baby books. The dialog can sound rather choppy when
reading aloud.

I really like the book "Guess How Much I Love You" and out all the books my little Payton has I think she likes hearing this story as opposed to any other ...
