Top Baby Books: Goodnight Moon
Author:
Heather's Review:
Margaret Wise Brown has the exclusive honor of being the only author to have two books listed as one of the Top Baby Books. (Runaway Bunny
is the other.) This beloved classic is a favorite before bedtime. In fact, it's best read aloud in a whisper.
The gentle pattern and repetition is soothing and sleepy as you slowly see the nursery transform into sleep. Saying goodnight to familiar things
provides a quiet closure to the day and can help ease into the separation of sleep. I may be a little biased, since my
mother read this to me when I was young, but it's a favorite around our home.
Besides the rhythm, parents can enjoy noticing smaller details in the pictures as you read (for the hundredth time). Things like watching the hands
on the clock progress, pointing out the movements of the mouse, various nursery-rhyme paintings, and other little quirks. (Wikipedia has a complete
list if you're interested.)
An Excerpt:
Goodnight comb.
And goodnight brush.
Goodnight nobody,
Goodnight mush.
If You Have to Nit-Pick...
The most common complaint about Goodnight Moon are the illustrations. Since the book was originally published in 1947, the pictures are somewhat
dated. Bright colors, strong lines...they are characteristics of Margaret Wise Brown's children's books. If you don't care for vintage-art, then
you may not like this book (or any of Margaret Wise Brown's books for that matter).
