Top Baby Books:
The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Author:

    Eric Carle

Heather's Review:

I remember my mother reading me The Very Hungry Caterpillar when I was young, so it is a special joy to be able to share it with my children. The biggest hit from the book for me (and my kids) was the holes! As the caterpillar eats through the various foods, he leaves a hole (perfect for little fingers!).

Educationally speaking, this book introduces young children to the days of the week, counting, identifying foods, even the lifespan of a caterpillar. As your baby gets older, try asking him what the foods are, or pointing and encouraging him to count how many oranges the caterpillar ate through on Friday, etc.

An Excerpt:

In the light of the moon a little egg lay on a leaf.
One sunny Sunday, the caterpillar was hatched out of a tiny egg.
He was very hungry. On Monday, he ate through one apple...

If You Have to Nit-Pick...

The illustrations in all the Eric Carle books are very similar in style. They are slightly abstract, and make me think of wrinkled tissue paper. Some people find the style distracting and to abstract for little minds.

Also, the junk food listed on "Saturday" (right before he gets a tummy ache) has disappointed some parents who try to limit their young children's exposure to sweets. Several parents didn't like having to point out what the sweets were to inquiring children.

These are the two most common complaints for the book. However, if neither is particularly offensive to you, then I would consider The Very Hungry Caterpillar a great nursery-room addition to the nightly bedtime routine!
