#1 ~ Play Yards

In the past 10 years, there have been 24 fatalities due to collapsing play yards. In fact, I was shocked to discover that my play yard had been recalled!

Babies are left unattended to nap inside, and decide to explore around the pen (naturally!). They pull on the sides, and they collapse, trapping the baby and causing asphyxiation and death.

See the pictures and get the details on these deadly recalled playpens.

#2 ~ Baby Walkers

Toy walkers contribute to over 3000 infant injuries (and several deaths) every year. In almost all of these cases, the injury or death was caused by an infant accidentally pushing himself down a flight of stairs.

In 1997 the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) revised its product standards for baby walkers, requiring that walkers be wider than a standard door frame and have special features that stop it at the top step.

Check to see if your walker meets those specifications or has been recalled.

#3 ~ Baby Cribs

Despite massive improvements in crib safety and design, every year there are a few that slip by. Although beautiful, crib cutout designs, tall corner posts, and slightly small mattresses can all catch on clothing or trap tiny heads, leading to several deaths each year.

If your crib is new or old, check the list to ensure it is safe for your baby to sleep in.

#4 ~ Slings and Carriers

Wearing your baby in a sling or carrier is a popular, and healthy thing to do. However, your carrier is only as good as the stitching, fabric and connectors. If those various components are defective, your baby could end up on the floor.

Besides checking over your sling or carrier for any broken threads or holes, you can also keep your infant safe by checking the list of slings and carriers that have been recalled.

#5 ~ Toys with Magnets and Lead Paint

Although most recalled toys are not baby toys, they are recalled specifically because they are most dangerous to your baby or young child. The two most common reasons for recalling a toy are for loose magnets and the presence of lead paint.

Besides being a choking hazards, tiny magnets can cause serious internal damage to your baby's digestive system. If your infant was to swallow more than one, there is a chance that they will attract one another inside, causing a blockage or internal rupture to occur.

The presence of lead paint on the surface of toys is also a concern. Of course, young children put everything in their mouths. If they were to suck and chew on an item with high levels of lead, it could seriously impair their intellectual and physical development. These effects are irreversible.

Stay one step ahead and glance through the toy recall report for 2008.
