Nationwide Grocery Delivery Reviews

Using a nationwide grocery delivery service has become an easy and affordable way to grocery shop.

Here are three reviews on the biggest home grocery delivery services, and reasons why you should consider giving them a try.

There is also a review of Sam's Club's Click 'n Pull program that allows you to shop online and then drive to your local Sam's Club for pickup. It is not technically a home delivery service, but is still a good option to consider.

Under each store I've included their policies and general information to help you learn more about which store may work best for you.

In the "Example Product Costs" of each section, I've compared the prices of three baby products (diapers, formula and food) for each nationwide grocery delivery service.

Nationwide Grocery Delivery:
Peapod.com

divider

Pros of Peapod:

They run a wide range of specials: from discounted turkeys for Thanksgiving to 50% of Wicked! The Musical tickets.

If you are not home during a delivery, they will pack the groceries in dry ice and leave them by the back door. You simply return the boxes at your next delivery. The dry ice keeps items cold or frozen even on hot summer days.

You can place your order several days in advance, or order the day before delivery. You can alter any delivery up until 11pneumatic the night before.

The "Express Shopping" option allows you to type in your entire grocery list and then go through one by one to order, rather than search per item.

Peapod also accepts manufacturer coupons.

Cons of Peapod:

Although the delivery areas are growing, they currently not accessible to everyone.

Peapod.com is the largest of the online grocery stores. They have been delivering groceries to homes since 1989 and are based in Skokie, Illinois. They have delivered (as of Nov. 2006) to over 270,000 customers.

Delivery Areas:

Peapod delivers to over 1500 zip codes and 12,700,000 households around these metro areas. They are considered a nationwide grocery delivery service, but although they do delivery across the nation, it is only in specific national areas.

Don't assume that if you do not live in the cities listed below you can't get delivery. Peapod delivers to suburbs and surrounding towns as well. If your home is within 30-45 minutes of these areas, you may still be eligible for delivery.

City/County State City/County State
Cromwell CT Boston MA
Fairfield Co. CT Cape Cod MA
Hartford CT Watchung NJ
New Haven CT Long Island NY
W. Danbury CT Mt. Vernon NY
Chicago IL Medford NY
Montgomery Co. MD Rhode Island --
Baltimore MD Fairfax County VA
Washington, D.C. -- Milwaukee WI

Types of Groceries:

Peapod carries dry goods, medicines, produce, meats and seafood, dairy, canned goods, baby items...pretty much anything you can find in a normal grocery store. They even have specialty categories for Kosher foods, natural and organics, pet, school supplies, beauty supplies, and alcohol.

State laws may prohibit Peapod from delivery alcohol to your door. If that is your situation, they will notify you when you attempt to place the order.

Delivery Charge:

The nationwide grocery delivery fee for Peapod starts at $9.95, but you can receive discounts by paying straight from your checking account and by choosing specific delivery times, making it go as low as $6.95. There is a $50 order minimum.

Example Product Costs:

Product Description Price Cost Per
Huggies Size 4; 34 count $10.99 $.31
Good Start Supreme DHA/ARA 25.7 oz $26.99 $1.05
Gerber 2nd Foods Bananas, 2 pk, 3.5oz each. $1.22 $.17

Final Thoughts

If you don't live in the delivery areas, you're sadly out of luck. If you are in the delivery area, consider giving trying it for a month to see what you think.

I've been able to secure an online grocery shopping coupon for my visitors: Click here for $10 in FREE groceries from Peapod!

You should see a new window with a $10 coupon code in it. If you do not see that coupon window, use coupon code CJN10 at checkout to get the $10 off.

Nationwide Grocery Delivery:
NetGrocer

divider

Pros of NetGrocer:

Anyone, anywhere can order through Netgrocer.

They sell a wider variety of foods than Amazon.com.

Cons of NetGrocer:

They do not deliver produce, so you'll still have to go to the store.

They have higher delivery charges for groceries. Online shopping is more difficult on their website, and they offer fewer product varieties than Peapod.

The longer delivery time makes it questionably worthwhile. Can you wait 5 days for delivery, or will you end of having to get something on day three?

Delivery Areas:

From Hawaii to New York, this nationwide grocery delivery service has got you covered. You can even put together a care package and send it to a loved one in the armed services serving overseas in Iraq or somewhere else via APO/FPO.

Types of Groceries:

Brand name groceries including refrigerated items like meat, deli, and diary. They do not offer produce.

Delivery Charge:

You must spend a minimum of $35 on refrigerated items (dairy, meat, deli) to order. The shipping is done via FedEx and is calculated by weight.

There are links on checkout that will automatically calculate your shipping rates using zip codes all over the world.

The orders will arrive within 3-7 business days, unless you are using an APO/FPO address, which may take longer. If you are not home when they arrive, the FedEx driver will leave the order on your doorstep.

If you live in an apartment, the driver will need access to a lobby or doorman.

Example Product Costs:

Product Description Price Cost Per
Huggies Size 4; 34 count $14.45 $.43
Good Start Supreme DHA/ARA 25.7 oz - Soy $33.95 $1.32
Gerber 2nd Foods Applesauce, 2 pk, 3.5oz each. $1.39 $.20

Final Thoughts:

NetGrocer is really ideal for those people who know they are going to be laid up for a while and can think farther ahead (like a new baby, perhaps?).

It is also wonderful that you can use this nationwide grocery delivery service to mail groceries anywhere. That friend in Pittsburgh who just delivered? Send her groceries!

Nationwide Grocery Delivery:
Amazon.com

divider

Pros of Amazon:

You can order from anywhere, and shipping is free.

The "Subscribe and Save" program offers automatic shipments and includes a bonus of 15% off every item.

Cons of Amazon:

They do not have refrigerated items or produce available.

You will have to wait several days to get your order if you choose free shipping. However, this may not be an issue if you use automatic reordering.

Sells only bulk of formula (6 cans) and baby food (16 servings) which doesn't always save you money.

Doesn't have a wide variety of baby food, just a handful (4 kinds). Sells mostly baby and toddler snacks.

Amazon.com is just beginning to move into the nationwide grocery delivery service.

They're huge range of products makes grocery shopping here even more tempting. Pick up a best-seller, new toaster, and diapers in one freely shipped package!

Delivery Areas:

As with Netgrocer, Amazon.com offers a nationwide grocery delivery service that can easily be expanded to anywhere in the world.

Types of Groceries:

Amazon does not sell refrigerated items. This means you'll have to purchase your fresh meat, dairy, seafood, deli, and produce somewhere else.

They do sell non-refrigerated soy products, frozen meat, canned goods, drinks, and baking essentials.

Delivery Charge:

The "Subscribe and Save" program gives you 15% off every item you purchase, and free shipping. The program is set up to automatically mail you chosen items every one, two, three, or six months. They even send you reminders of when your next shipment is coming. Only eligible items are able to be used, but there are quite a few of eligible items (including baby items) for you to choose from.

If you're not using "Subscribe and Save" any order over $25 qualifies for Free Super Saver Shipping.

Amazon Prime is a $79 yearly charge that gives you 2-day shipping on all eligible purchases, free standard shipping, and the ability to upgrade to overnight services for $3.99 per item.

Example Product Costs:

Product Description Price Cost Per
Huggies Size 4; 126 count $32.69 $.26
Good Start Supreme DHA/ARA 25.7 oz (pk of 6) $158.50 $1.10
Gerber 2nd Foods Organic Green Beans, 8 pkgs of 2 (3.5oz) servings $25.80 $.46

Final Thoughts:

Amazon has a few good things going for it. Not only is it a nationwide grocery delivery service, it's also worldwide. Combine that with free shipping and the automatic reordering system, and you may have a winner.

The opportunity to automatically purchase baby items in bulk could be really helpful. However, due diligence should be taken because they are not always cheaper.

Amazon.com is best if you want to supplement your local grocery shopping and not replace it, because they can't ship perishable items like milk, meat (unless frozen), or produce.

Sam's Club Click 'n Pull

divider

Here's a partial review of Sam's Club's pick up service. You order your groceries online, and they will assemble and have your order ready for you to pick up. It is not a full review, because it is not delivered directly to your home. Still, it is an excellent service that may be helpful to you.

All items at Sam's Club are sold in in value packs, which may or not be worth the yearly membership fee you have to pay. (Advantage, $40; Business, $35) You will have to crunch the numbers and to make sure. Occasionally they will mail out coupons for a free visit to help you decide. The Sam's Club website will have more information on this.

The off-brand items are particularly cheap at Sam's Club. Personally, we purchase our diapers and most of our formula through Sam's Club.

Product Description Price Cost Per
Huggies Size 4; 176 count $37.48 $.21
Member's Mark Gentle Formula - 48oz $25.48 $.53
Gerber 2nd Foods Assorted Fruit Pack, 18 pkgs $8.58 $.48

I have found, in the 5 years I've been using a home grocery service, that regular shopping online is one of the easiest ways to carefully monitor and control the grocery budget.

I cannot express to you what a relief it is on Saturday mornings to know that I don't have to go to the grocery store on "errand" days. Bringing my kids to the grocery store is usually a long and tedious chore.

By ordering most of my groceries online I find that we eliminate that hassle, and get to spend actual quality time together, instead of spending the day standing in line.

If you have not yet "taken the plunge" I would encourage you to give a nationwide grocery delivery service a try. What have you got to lose? It just may save you time and money.
