...and I like designer baby bedding.

I can't help it. In fact, I'm just the teensiest-weensiest jealous of the octuplet mom...just THINK of all the crib bedding she got to pick out!

MAN, I'd love to be the friend to help with that shopping.

(Notice I didn't say "the mom"...my mothering limit is a lot smaller than 8!)

Can we all just admit it? Can we all just fess up to the fact that picking out infant bedding is one of the major perks of having a baby?

Since my babies are all several years apart, I've made it a tradition to pick out a new bedding set with each child. Why? Because, first of all, I'm a self-proclaimed crib-natic (yes, I made that word up. think "fanatic about cute cribs".)

Secondly, because I have this wierd hormonal thing that takes over with each pregnancy (sound familiar?) and convinces my more-sane brain-side that without a new set, this clueless newborn won't know how special she is. (Do pity my husband.)

And since she's going to be wearing hand-me-downs until she's twenty, I have convinced myself that we (as her parents) have some moral obligation to let the first thing her little bum rests on be new.

Is this irrational? Absolutely. Ridiculous? Perhaps.

Important for my psychological adjustment to "Next Baby"? BEYOND A DOUBT.

Finally (and by-far the most reasonable reason), because my kids are ruthless with their baby bedding sets. They drool. They slobber. They leak. They spit up. It ain't pretty.

And after 2 years of stains, tears, and chews,
my infant bedding is begging me to donate to a "kinder, gentler" home.

Now, granted, with my first baby, when things were particularly tough, that "new set" came through a massive clearance sale and extra coupon codes...but who cares?

It's possible to avoid paying "designer" costs for your designer baby bedding and no one needs to know. On the other hand, if you can afford not to scrimp on quality, there are some pretty amazing (and expensive) designer baby bedding sets out there to choose from.

Now that my third baby is growing away inside, I'm on the prowl for a new set. Here are several stores I've turned to in the past, and some new ones I'm contemplating for my next "collection". (Edit Note: Baby #3 has arrived! See photos here.)

If you're just beginning to set up your nursery, make sure to review my tips to make your baby's bedroom the safest place in your house. After all, it's the one place in your entire house where he will spend a significant amount of unsupervised time!

Personally, I recommend ordering your bedding near the beginning of your last trimester (if not earlier). Not only will this give the set time to arrive, if your little one decides he's through with your uterus and comes out early, you won't be left scrambling for bedding.

Side Note: Many of the bedding pictures in these boutiques show cribs with their side panels removed. This is just to showcase the bedding, and is not a recommendation of use! Also keep in mind that what you see is not always what you get. Read the bedding descriptions to see what's included in the standard price and what you have to pay extra for.

A Word About Ratings...

You may notice that the lowest rating I've given any of these is 3 stars. Why? Because if a store deserves only 1 or 2 stars, it doesn't deserve mentioning (nor your visit). 3-star rated stores are still worth a visit, just with a few precautions.

{Babylicious Island Modern}

Baby Earth does a great job in the delicate balancing act of "organic" and "not-boring". Unlike many other organic shops, their bedding ranges from bright bold colors and patterns, to more muted "natural-looking" bedding sets. They literally have something for everyone (even the picky people like myself).

Also unique to Baby Earth, they have the first bumper-free designed crib set I've seen. Many parents are wary about putting bumpers on their crib sets. If that's you, the "Babylicious Island" set provides a similiar style, bumper-free. I've pictured it here.

I'm at a loss to come up with any negatives with Baby Earth in regards to their crib bedding. I guess if you pushed me, I would point out that not all the sets say "organic". You will have to research those non-labeled manufacturers on your own to determine if their products are considered all natural or 100% organic.

The first thing I was struck with about the designer baby bedding at Bunnybury Baby (say that 3 times fast...) was how well-organized it was.

Girls, boys, unisex, modern, traditional...the layout makes searching so much easier. Instead of hundreds on a single page to thumb through, each section has a handful, according to that category.

Some sets are custom-made according to your order, so double check before placing your order. Those labeled "custom" will not be available for rush shipping. (See my suggestion at the top of this page about when to order your crib sets.)

I noticed a few crib sets at Bunnybury also available in other bedding boutiques. Some quick research revealed that the pricing was almost exactly the same, so you may want to make current coupons and sales your deciding shopping factor.

On the other hand, you could forget about the coupons altogether and start browsing at Bunnybury Baby right away.

Baby Catalog has some adorable options from Kids Line and Lambs and Ivy. Unlike at Baby Brown's, which focuses on patterns, the designer baby bedding sets here are focused on characters and themes.

So, if you want to have an "ocean" or "jungle" theme, shopping at Baby Catalog is a good start to your search. Prices are very reasonable, and it's not uncommon for them to have free shipping coupons or other offers.

It's petty, but my biggest complaint is the website. It seems cluttered to me. From a design standpoint, I think they could do much better. Usually when I click through, my eyes are instantly overwhelmed and I have to take a moment to remember what I'm searching for before looking for the right link. (But that could just be me...) However, good prices could make a visit worth your while.

As for the bedding, they tout three designers, but really only two have any selection. (The third, JJ Cole, had only 1 set listed as of this writing.) Again, if you like characters and themes, you'll love what they have to offer. If you prefer patterns (rather than pictures) you're better off searching elsewhere.

In all, it's a great bedding site. Is the bedding as designer as at other sites? No. But I highly recommend visiting anyway.

Dimples and Dandelions is just a pleasing shop to look at. A soft website design welcomes you in without overwhelming you with "special offers". It's a soothing place to browse and shop. And the bedding? It's gorgeous. It is 100% designer designer baby bedding.

You can request free fabric swatches from most of the bedding sets they sell. If you already have a painted nursery, or have other items (like a chair) you need to match, these swatches are a godsend. No more having to buy and return several times while you search for the best match.

Besides looking around at sets, their website has given me nursery decorating ideas as well. Most sets are displayed in a nursery setting, and I love "stealing" their trendy and beautiful designs. Click here to peek at their beautiful crib bedding sets.

Dimples and Dandelions is a pretty up-scale boutique. Finding designer baby bedding under $200 is rare. If you're on a budget crunch you can A) start saving now, or B) check to see if there are any coupons you can use.

If you can afford it, the designer baby bedding at Dimples and Dandelions is definitely top-notch, definitely designer.

Bumper Crop Baby is bedding straight from the needle to your nursery. Founder and owner Suzette assists you in creating your own 100% unique design and look. She specializes in the can't-find-exactly-what-I-had-in-mind-crowd.

She doesn't sell fabric - which means you choose any fabric you want. She doesn't force you to choose from "Style A, Style B, or Style C", but really just throws the door open and lets you dream. You tell her the things you like and she turns it into a reality. For sewing-impaired Muggles like me, it feels like pure magic.

Suzette is a fellow mom like us who hails from Missouri and loves to sew. In fact, she's passionate about sewing. She would LOVE to help you find the perfect designer baby bedding for your infant. Final Thoughts...

Hmmm...what can I complain about...Cost? Not really. Rather than charge you a flat fee for the bedding, she shares her labor costs (she does have a family to help feed) and then you pay for the fabric. Unless you're ordering hand-woven silks from the Emperor's personal silkworms in The Forbidden City, you'll most likely come out ahead.

Quality? Can't complain there. In fact, I've been so impressed with Suzette's beautiful handiwork and L-O-N-G happy customer list, that I asked her to sponsor one of my giveaways. (Which she did, by the way, 'cause she's nice.)

Many of the bedding sets at The Land of Nod have a cozy quilted feel that gives the appearance of being homemade. (Go ahead...impress your mother-in-law...I won't tell...).

They have a healthy mixture of picture- and pattern-focused prints. I especially like that their picture-based prints are not overly commercialized. (I'm not a fan of Disney-themed crib sets. I promise, you won't find those here...)

Unlike many other bedding boutiques, Land of Nod sells each item separately. This allows you to choose the exact items you want and leave the rest. This is especially helpful for mothers on a strict baby budget!

Stretch that budget even further with coupon codes. Or, go directly to look around The Land of Nod.

Designers and Brands

Organics are available. All the bedding found at Land of Nod is designed by individual designers like Susan Lazar and Jill McDonald (among others) and is sold under the Land of Nod brand name. This means that all their bedding is exclusively found at their store. You will only find these bedding sets at Land of Nod.

Final Thoughts...

The Land of Nod is known for great design, and they don't disappoint in the realm of baby bedding. They only scored a 3 out of 5 for their clothing selection (see clothing reviews here), but they've moved up for bedding.

They also very cost-effective. You can pick and choose which pieces you can afford at that moment and add the rest of the pieces later (if ever).

Layla Grayce is just a fun place to look around. They have aprons for goodness sake! and don't think Grandma. Think Aubrey Hepburn on Wisteria Lane.

These are "welcome home, HONEY" kind of aprons. Cute, flirty, domestic and darling. I guess if you're looking for a reason NOT to cook for your husband, here it is. I don't think he'll be interested in supper when you greet him at the door in one of these...

Back to baby bedding. I was impressed with the sheer number of options they have to chose from. 15 and counting different designers, each with several designs to choose from.

Prices go as $200 for a set, all the way up to over $500 for Little Giraffe's satins and silks. All their bedding sets ship for free.

I honestly can't say that I would change anything about Layla Grayce I found the prices reasonable (depending on what you're purchasing, of course) and the designs were well split between trendy and traditional, bright and muted.

I know it's strange, but My Strollers actually has a pretty large selection of high end baby bedding. They offer free shipping on everything you buy (for 48 states), with no minimums (this is rare, and really amazing).

They also have a "Price Match Guarantee" on all final prices (even after rebates). If you purchase an item at My Strollers and see a better price somewhere else, within 2 weeks, let them know and they'll refund you the difference.

This level of customer care is becoming increasingly rare. Needless to say, they've managed to impress me.

Bold patterns and designs set One Step Ahead bedding apart from other boutiques. Most of their designs come from artist Kimberly Grant. From wallpaper borders to mobiles, you can match every item in the nursery. The basic bedding set is sold as a 4-piece set and is between $180 - $280.

Many sets include a variety of textures as well. For example, the "Zen Baby" set (pictured here) has faux suede, appliques, embroidery, and ribbons for a variety of fun surfaces for your baby to explore.

If you're a regular blog subscriber to the EiR (and if not, you should be!), you probably already know that Pink Taffy Designs is one of my "Best of the Best Baby Boutiques". Their products are eye-popping unique and are considered to be trend-setting across the "baby" market.

Besides the designers mentioned below, Pink Taffy also has a wide-variety of custom-made bedding. Order early! It will take around 8 weeks for delivery. Becuase of this specality, many sets are found only at the Pink Taffy website.

The site, although pretty, is a little clunky. It may take a little time to find what you're looking for (but in the mean time, it's fun to see all they have available!). At first, you may be tempted to think it's a "girl's store" due to all the frills and pinks. Au contraire mon fraire! Make that mistake, and you'll be missing some incredibly great designer baby bedding sets for your little boy.

Expect to pay more for the bedding here than at other non designer baby bedding stores. You're purchasing double-stitched bedding with top-notch fabrics and individually-designed patterns. Those extra perks cost extra!
