6 Weeks Old and No Bowel Movement

by Christa

My six week old son hasn't had a bowel movement in over 24 hrs is this normal?

I am pumping and feeding him half breast milk and half formula in a bottle! Up until a few days ago he was having a bowel movement 4-5 times a day and now is barely having one! I tried to give him prune juice diluted, and he spit it up! What can i do?

There are a few things you can try, if he's still constipated. First, you could try to switch your brand of formula. Perhaps going to a soy formula instead (or vice versa) could get things moving again.

If you just started combo-feeding, it isn't uncommon for your baby's digestive system to take a few days to adjust. If it's been around 48 hours since a movement, a phone call to your pediatrician may be helpful.

As for the prune juice, a baby this young should only have a teaspoon or two of prune juice, and I would try mixing it into his milk bottle.

Hope this helps!
